Things I Love

fermenting foods

It is the fault of #fermentools that my counter is full of jars!

This week has been a busy one around the DePixi homestead. We’ve put up our small tree and hung a few ornaments, set up our standard holiday decor including the Christmas Walrus (don’t you have one?!) and sang traditional songs like “Gabba gabba hey, click click click” as made popular on the very silly cartoon show Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

Now that we are properly decked for Yuletide, I’ve got to get back to work with writing up some posts for you lovely folks, featuring a few of the lovely ferments in the picture. The Daikon & Apple Sauerkraut is just about done, and boy, is it tasty!  If you have a person in your life who enjoys fermenting foods, consider a Fermentools kit as a holiday gift. It just makes the process so much easier, and makes my kitchen less sour ferment-scented.

This weekend’s plans include bottling 5 gallons of porter, making soft, chewy gingerbread cookies for a cookie exchange, and hopefully having some sweet downtime with my love. I hope your weekend is lovely, too!

Here’s some nifty things I found to share with you:

If you’ve been interested in herbalism and brewing but haven’t had the time to make your own wine, consider making your own herb-infused wine. You can get your own herbs and add them to store-bought wine to make a fortified drink. The Mountain Rose Herbs Blog shows you how!

Have you ever watched rabbits or squirrels eating fallen apples and getting tipsy? If not, you are really missing out on a giggle. But it isn’t just them – humans and pre-humans have been eating fermented fruits for a long, LONG time before we started brewing alcohol on purpose. SCIENCE!

I just received four scarves that I ordered from The Gordian Sisters — they are truly gorgeous! And their customer service is first-rate!

Oh, thank you for sharing your positive experience, Elizabeth! I have a pinkish-bluish-purplish silk scarf from Gordian Sisters that I use on my straw sunhat, or my tophat, if I’m feeling fancy. 🙂

That drunken squirrel video is priceless. I’m looking forward to hearing about your daikon and apple sauerkraut, I have soooo many daikons from the garden right now 🙂

OMG, glow in the dark table! Didn’t know you could do that. Seems like a bruised shin preventive. 😀
